a. Note:   Funeral Mass for Herman L. Gstohl was held January 31, 1999 in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Salem, SD. Fr. Joseph Ripp celebrated the Mass. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons; David Eichacker, Jerry Eichacker, Kevin Eichacker, Keith Eichacker, Curt Eichacker, Chris Krouse, Gary Kolbeck, Ron Kolbeck, Lonnie Gstohl. Herman L. Gstohl, son of Fred and Elizabeth (Leonard) Gstohl, was born June 22, 1915 in Delzell, SD. He grew up in the Delzell and New Underwood, SD communities. He served in the CCC Camps in Custer, SD and in Arkansas. He moved to Salem in 1936. On October 10, 1938 he married Muriel Sabers. He farmed west of Salem. His wife died in 1977 and on July 31, 1981 he married Lavon Healy. After his retirement he moved into Salem. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Salem and was a former member of the Salem Township Board of Directors. During his lifetime he enjoyed doing taxidermy work and also loved to play cards. Herman died December 28, 1999 at the Avera McKennan Hospice Unit in Sioux Falls, SD. He had reached the age of 84 years, 6 months, and 6 days. Survivors include his wife, Lavon of Salem, SD; one son Darrell of Salem, SD; three daughters, Elaine Eichacker and husband Don, Carol Kolbeck and husband Jerry both of Salem, SD; and Norma Krouse and husband Doug of Sioux Falls, SD; a step-son, Patrick Healy and wife Dotty of Kansas City, Kansas; two step-daughters, Rita Jones and husband Jerry of Sioux Falls, SD; and Ida Huls and husband Paul of Hartford, SD; 12 grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren; and two sisters, Gertrude Curtis and Florence Huff both of Oregon. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Muriel, and a brother, Raymond.
