Note:   Salem Special, Salem, SD 1-5-1956 ** Funeral services for Emil Sabers, 50, Salem businessman who was accidentally shot here on 12-28-1955 were held Saturday 12-31-1955 with a Requiem Mass at St. Marys Catholic Church with Msgr. B. Weber officiating and assisting by Rev. Kolbeck of Howard, SD and Rev Leonard Nemmers of Lennox, SD. Burial was in St. Marys Cemetery with Kinzley Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Pallbearers were J.N. Steffensmeier, Leo Reif, Guy Mc Cullough, Albert Hipschman, J.H. Morrison, and August Timmerman. Sabers' tragic death took place on the evening of 12-28-1955 after he and his companion, J.H. Morrison, had returned to Salem following a short fishing trip. He died almost instantly after an automatic rifle, being removed from his car, discharged, the bullet striking Sabers in the chest. Emil Sabers was born 8-11-1905 on a farm near Salem and lived his entire life in or near the city of Salem, SD. He attended school here and graduated in 1924. On 9-10-1929 he was united in marriage to Elrena Godfrey at St. Marys Catholic Church by Father Weber. To this union 10 children were born, 9 of whom survive. Mr. Sabers had been engaged in business since he graduated from high school. He operated a cream station for a short time and the rest of his life-time he spend in the grocery business in Salem. He was to have observed the 25th anniversary of Sabers Food Mart this year. Sabers served as mayor of Salem a few years ago. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Foresters, Fireman, and Progressive Merchants Association. He was also an enthusiastic sportsman. He is survived by his wife, Elrena; five daughters, Jean (Mrs. Jack Hersman), Huron, SD; Sister Marie Celeste, Mitchell, SD; Carol (Mrs. W.P. Seymour), Evanston, Illinois; Karen and Margie, Salem, SD; four sons, Darrell, Richard, Donald, and Keith, Salem, SD; six sisters, Miss Irene Sabers, Sioux Falls, SD; Mrs. R.R. Carpenter, Huron, SD; Mrs. George Carey, Mitchell, SD; Mrs. Angela Thompson, Sioux Falls, SD; Mrs. Louis Herting, Sioux Falls, SD; Mrs. Don Comme, Sioux Falls, SD; two brothers, Ralph Sabers, Sioux Falls, SD; Robert Sabers, Salem, SD; And three grandchildren. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Sabers, Salem, SD; And a host of other relatives. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ervin, in 1936.
