He came to Salem, SD in 1898 and settled on a farm 2.5 miles west of town. His father, Henry Sabers, bought this farm as he couldn't afford to buy land in eastern Iowa. John's uncle, Barney Roling, lived on the same section. In 1899 when Henry visited his son John, he saw the sad effort in housekeeping and sent John's sister, Anna, to keep house for him. In 1900 John bought the farm from his father and later purchased another quarter of that section. The farm is now owned by his children Irene and Robert. On January 21, 1903 a double wedding was held in St. Boniface's Church in New Vienna, Iowa. John Sabers and Agatha Agnes Raue and Anna Sabers and Henry Tuschen were married. Both couples lived within a few miles of each other southwest of Salem. Agnes Raue was born in Germany in 1879 and came to Dakota Territory with her parents Emil (Emanuel) and Elizabeth Raue, and her brother, Henry Raue, in early 1880. They lived on a farm now known as the Jack and Helen Raue-Lanners farm. Elizabeth Raue died in 1886 and Emil died in 1893. John and Agnes Sabers had ten children all of whom were baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's. Irene Sabers graduated from St. Mary's eighth grade in 1917, worked in the courthouse for eleven years and moved to Sioux Falls in 1933. Emil Sabers, born in 1905, married Elrena Godfrey and had nine children: Jean Herschman, Sister Celeste (Joan), Carole Seymour, Darrell Sabers married Donna Schultz, Richard married Colleen Kelley, Donald Sabers married Shirley Hipschman, Karen married Frank Dalrymple, Keith Sabers married Janey Nagel, and Marjorie married Charles (Bud) Heinie. Emil died in 1955 and Elrena in 1982. Florence Sabers married Carpenter, Chuck Sabers died in 1936. Laverne Carey, Angela Thompson, Lucille Herting - Poore, Josephine McCay - Coome, Ralph Sabers married Catherine Grendler. Robert Sabers married Carol Rae Barnes and their children are Deb, John, Paul, Mark, and William. In 1910 John Sabers went to Chicago and bought a Model T Ford, and started the first Ford Agency in partnership with John Scheier and Ed Werner, naming the business Sabers, Scheier, and Werner. He sold his interest in the business and later built the garage across from St. Mary's School. In January 1924 John Sabers bought the gas station on Norton Avenue from Joe Blindert and Msgr. B. Weber and called it Sabers Oil Co. In 1951 he retired from the business and his youngest son, Robert, took over the business. On January 21, 1953 John and Agnes Sabers celebrated their 50th anniversary. John died at age 81 in 1958, and was survived by his wife, six daughters, two sons, 31 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Salem Special, Salem, SD., Thursday, Feb 29, 1968 ** Mrs. John (Agnes) Sabers, 88, nearly a lifelong resident of the Salem area, died suddenly at the home of her daughter in Sioux Falls, SD on Feb 27, 1968. Funeral Mass for Mrs. Sabers will be Mar 1, 1968 at St. Mary's Church with Mrs. Sabers' grandson, the Rev. Patrick Carey officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Pallbearers will all be grandsons: Richard, Donald, and Keith Sabers, James Carpenter, Gerald Carey, and Jeffrey Coome. Agnes Raue, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Raue, was born in Germany on Nov 21, 1879. She came to the Salem area with her parents when she was three months old and lived her entire life here until just a few years ago when she went to Sioux Falls to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Jim (Lucille) Herting. She was united in marriage to Mr. John Sabers at New Vienna, Iowa on Jan 21, 1903. The couple farmed here and later he operated garages in Salem city. Mr. Sabers died in 1958. Mrs. Sabers was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Salem. Mrs. Sabers is survived by six daughters, Irene Sabers, Mrs. Angela Thompson, Mrs. Jim (Lucille) Herting, and Mrs. Don (Josephine) Coome, all of Sioux Falls, SD; Mrs. George (Laverne) Carey of Mitchell, SD; and Mrs. Florence Carpenter of Huron, SD; two sons, Ralph Sabers of Gallup, New Mexico; and Robert Sabers of Salem, SD; one sister, Lena Raue of Salem, SD; 35 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; two sons, Ervin and Emil, and one brother, Henry Raue.
