He and his wife were killed in a car accident near Stanley Corner, South Dakota Salem Special, Salem, South Dakota, Thursday, January 16, 1940 Mr. and Mrs. Louis Roling, of Sioux Falls, died on Tuesday as the result of injuries received in an automobile accident that occurred just east of Watsons Store on Highway 16 in Spring Valley township at 10 oclock that morning. The couple were apparently on their way to Salem to visit the gentlemans mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Roling. They were traveling west and came up behind a hayrack driven by Harold Langerock, a farmer living near the scene of the accident. When they turned out to pass the rack they met a truck traveling east and, although the truck is reported to have drawn over onto the right shoulder of the highway, the car was sideswiped and thrown against the hayrack, both the car and the rack going into the ditch. At the impact of the car and truck the doors flew open and Mr. and Mrs. Roling were catapulted onto the pavement. Mr. Roling was virtually scalped and died while being taken into Sioux Falls in an ambulance. His wife had a crushed skull and brain injuries. She was rushed to a Sioux Falls hospital where an immediate operation was resorted to in a desperate attempt to save her life, but she died at about 10 oclock that evening, 12 hours after the accident. Mr. Langerock was unhurt when his rack was struck. Sheriff Dewey and Coroner Lindekugel were summoned and the latter announced after his investigation that it was clearly an accident and that no inquest would be called. Mr. Roling was born in this community 33 years ago and grew to manhood in Salem. He was married to Amanda Greb, of Valley City, North Dakota, and they have since made their home in Sioux Falls, operating a service station and lunchroom at 2512 South Minnesota avenue in that city. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Roling of Salem; three brothers, Fred, Ben, and Gregor, all of Salem; five sisters, Mrs. John E. Bies of Salem; Mrs. John Rodenbur of Alexandria; Mrs. George Bernard of Sioux Falls; Mrs. Peter Franzen of Wathena, Kansas; and Mrs. Carl Christensen of Yankton, SD. The brothers of the unfortunate young man went to Sioux Falls on Wednesday to arrange for the funerals of both victims.
