Note: Salem Special 5-21-1964 Fred F. Roling, 72, who was born at Salem, South Dakota and who lived and farmed in the Salem area for many years, was killed 5-18-1964 when pinned between the axle of his tractor and a tree which he had uprooted with the vehicle at his farm southwest of Madison, SD. Lake County Coroner Donald Weiland said Mr. Roling drove to a field on his farm one mile south and a mile east of the Orland school about 1030 a.m. to pull out several trees. His wife went to the field and discovered the accident about 1 p.m. Mr. Roling had retired from farming about five years ago. Funeral Mass was said at St. Mary's Church in Salem, SD with burial held at St. Mary's Cemetery. Mr. Roling is survived by his widow, three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Marceline) Olinger, Salem, SD; Mrs. Edward (Betty) Giefer and Mrs. Gordon (Gene) Bargfrede, both of Jackson, Minnesota, 16 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, two brothers and five sisters.
