a. Note:   Salem Special 9-24-1953 ** A Requiem Mass was celebrated 9-19-1953 at St. Mary's Catholic Church for Mrs. Elizabeth Roling who died 9-17-1953. Burial was in St. Mary's cemetery. Elizabeth Augustine was born 11-19-1863 in Westphal Germany. She came to the United States when she was a year old and lived in Dyersville, Iowa during her childhood. She married Bernard Roling 2-10-1886 at New Vienna, Iowa. After her marriage she lived one year at New Vienna, Iowa and then she and her husband came to South Dakota in 1887. To this union 10 children were born, 8 of whom survive. The Roling's farmed near Salem, South Dakota until they retired in 1924 at which time they moved into Salem city. Her husband, Bernard, passed away in 1931. Mrs. Roling made her home in Salem until illness forced her to give up her home in March 1951. From then on she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Nora Bies, in Salem, South Dakota. Until her death on 9-17-1953 she was bed ridden all this time. She is survived by five daughters; Mrs. Nora Bies, Salem, SD; Mrs. Clara Franzen, San Francisco, CA; Mrs. Rose Rodenbur, Alexandria, SD; Mrs. Emma Bernard, Sioux Falls, SD; and Mrs. Bertha Christensen, Yankton, SD; three sons: Fred Roling, Yankton, SD; Bernard and Gregor Roling, Salem, SD; one sister, Mrs. Katie Fibbs, Sioux City, Iowa; and one brother, Henry Augustine, Dyersville, Iowa. There were 23 grandchildren and 59 great grandchildren, also a host of relatives and friends. Pallbearers were Alvin Bies, Lloyd Roling, Bud Roling, Ralph Roling, Edgar Bernard, and Ronald Christensen, all of whom are grandsons of the deceased. Out of town relatives attending the funeral were Mrs. Marie Rodenbur, Alexandria, SD; Mrs. Kate Gibbs, Sioux City, Iowa; Mrs. John Rodenbur, Alexandria, SD; Mr. and Mrs. George Bernard, Sioux Falls, SD; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Augustine, Dyersville, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Joe M. Herting, Elmhurst, Iowa; Bertha Christensen, Yankton, SD; Donna Christensen, Yankton, SD; Mrs. Emma Roling and sons, Montrose, SD; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roling, Madison, SD; Mr. and Mrs. Edward Giefer, St. Paul, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Shaefer, Colton, SD; Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Roling, Humboldt, SD; Eugene Roling, Madison, SD; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Zimmer, Montrose, SD; Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Christensen, Springfield, South Dakota. Elizabeth Augustine received her First Communion on April 8, 1877 in the Catholic Church in Dyersville, Iowa.
