He had been feeling ill health for about 4 years and on Christmas night his condition took a decidedly unfavorable turn and from then until his death he was confined to his bed. Bernard Roling was born near New Vienna, Dubuque County, Iowa 10-12-1860 where he gave to manhood and on 2-10-1885 was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Augustine. For two years he farmed near Luxemburg, Iowa and then came to Salem, South Dakota residing on a farm 7 miles east of town for 6 years and from there he moved onto the Sabers farm west of town which he farmed for another 6 years. 32 years ago he purchased what was known as the Potter farm, two miles west of Salem, where he continued to reside while actively engaged in farming for 23 years. About 9 years ago he retired and moved to town. He is survived by his wife, 4 sons; Fred, Bernard Jr., Gregor, and Louis; and five daughters; Eleanor, Clara, Rose, Emma, and Bertha, all of whom were present at the time the summons came. Also four brothers and four sisters, Anton, Henry, Mary, and Josephine of New Vienna, Iowa; and John, Farley, Iowa; Fred, Remsen, Iowa; Anna, Dyersville, Iowa; and Catharine, Granville, Iowa. One son, John, preceded his father in death about 6 months ago. Barney Roling, as he was familiarly known to a large circle of friends, was pleasant and kindly disposed toward all with whom he came in contact. In his death the community looses a worthy citizen and his family a kind and loving husband and father. A large number of relatives and friends were present to honor the memory of the deceased. Among the out of town relatives and friends present were Mrs. Will Sabers, and son John, Frank and Henry Augustine, Dyersville, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roling, Remsen, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. John Beckman, Granville, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. J. Augustine and sons Ray and Gregor, Fred Desendorf, Gettes, South Dakota; Mrs. Bernard Kuhl, Marcus, Iowa; Mrs. Clara Franzen, St. Joseph, Missouri; Mr. and Mrs. George Bernhard, and family, Louis Roling, Sioux Falls, SD; Mr. and Mrs. John Rodenbur, and family, Alexandria, SD; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Christen, and family, Aberdeen, SD. Article taken from "100 Years of Faith 1885-1985" published by St. Mary's Catholic Church, Salem, South Dakota in 1985. Barney Roling was born in Dubuque, Iowa in 1860. His wife Elizabeth Augustine was born in Westphalen, Germany in 1864. They were married in 1885 and came to South Dakota in 1887 where they homesteaded on a farm southwest of Salem. The Roling farm is still occupied by a great grandson. Barney and Elizabeth Roling had 10 children. There are four grandchildren remaining in St. Mary's Parish: Lloyd Roling, Marceline Olinger, Cornelius "Bud" Roling and Antonella Hipschman. Many Roling descendants are still in the parish.
