Note: Salem Special, Salem, South Dakota April 12, 1973 Funeral services for Mrs. Hattie Murphy were held Saturday April 7, 1973 at 2 p.m. at the Salem United Church in Salem, SD. Rev. Lyle Miller officiated. Burial was in the Wildwood Cemetery at Salem. Kinzley Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. R.E. Sabers was vocalist and Mrs. Harlan Paulsen was the organist. Pallbearers were John A. Lauch, Don Gibson, Fred Fluegel, Howard Hause, Walt Stagna, and C.B. "Bud" Roling. Hattie Ethel Sherman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Sherman, was born at Canistota on March 20, 1887. She grew to womanhood here and on December 16, 1906 she was united in marriage to Thomas J. Murphy also at Canistota, SD. They lived in Canistota for a few years and for the past 53 years they made their home in Salem. Mr. Murphy preceded his wife in death in 1962. Mrs. Murphy passed away at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Salem on April 5, 1973 at the age of 86 years and 15 days. She was a member of the Salem United Church, United Christian Women, and the Sunbeam Rebekah Lodge, also of Salem. She is survived by two sons, William and Norman, both of Santa Ana, California; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
