a. Note:   Tom and Hattie Murphy lived in Canistota, South Dakota after their marriage and later moved to Salem, South Dakota. Tom worked at Bellman Produce and was elected several times to Mc Cook County Treasurer on the Republican ticket. T.J. Murphy Completes 28 Years As McCook County Officer March 1 T.J. Murphy, who has spent 28 years as an employee at the McCook County Courthouse in Salem, SD retired today. Murphy moved to Salem from Canistota, when he was first elected to a county office 30 years ago. There were a few years intermission but at retirement he has served 28 years as an officer continuously. Murphy served four years as treasurer; four years as auditor and now, 20 years as deputy treasurer, on the Republican ticket. He was given a farewell party at the courthouse Friday. The event was held in the community room and a gift was presented to him by the other members of the courthouse staff. Also included in the farewell party was Ernest Herting who steps out of the office as auditor, an office he has held for the past two years. Murphy says he does not know just what he will do now. Perhaps go fishing when the time comes for that recreation. Mr. and Mrs. Murphy will continue to make their home in Salem. They have two sons, Norman and William. Norman lives in Salem and William in Santa Ana, California. Salem Special, Salem, South Dakota March 29, 1962 Thomas J. Murphy, 78, a veteran employee in various offices in the Mc Cook County Court House for the past several years, died Tuesday afternoon March 27, 1962 in a Sioux Falls, SD hospital where he had been hospitalized since March 16, 1962. Funeral services for Mr. Murphy were held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Salem Methodist Church with the Rev. Wayne D. Helmerich officiating. Burial was in the Wildwood Cemetery with Kinzley Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. I.O.O.F. Graveside rites will be held. Pallbearers for the service were Earl Janish and J.F.Haas of Canistota, SD; Walter Stagna, Donald Gibson, Ernest Carmichael, and C.B.Baughman all of Salem, SD. Thomas J. Murphy was born January 28,1884 in Minnehaha County South Dakota near the town of Wall Lake. For the past forty years he had lived in Salem, SD. Prior to that time he had lived in the Montrose and Canistota, SD area. He was united in marriage to Miss Hattie Sherman in Canistota on December 16, 1906. During the time Mr. Murphy lived in Salem he served as County Auditor, and County Treasurer, and had worked for a number of years as a deputy in the offices. He was a member of the Salem Methodist Church, and the Independent Order of Oddfellows. Survivors include his widow, two sons, Norman of Salem, SD; and William, of Santa Ana, CA; brothers William and Jack of Sioux Falls, SD; and Tim of St. Paul, Minnesota; three grandchildren and a number of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 78 years, 1 month, and 29 days.
