Note: Lorena Carlson Marks daughter of August and Emma "Youngreen" Carlson was born on February 28, 1905, near Spencer, SD She grew up in the Spencer-Farmer, SD area and graduated from Farmer High School in 1923. She was a great basketball player and she enjoyed showing team pictures and reliving the games. Lorena Carlson married Leslie Marks on March 24, 1924. They farmed east of Salem, SD until 1956. They had 4 children: Darrell, Robert "Bob", Donald and Rita Mae. In 1956 Les and Lorena moved to Eden Prairie, Minnesota on an acreage. Leslie worked for the Eden Prairie School system. Lorena worked part-time in the Hopkins Bakery. They had garden and raspberry crops on their acreage. Leslie passed away in 1972. Lorena lived in Minnesota until 1983 when she sold the acreage and she moved to Fulton-Rockport, Texas to be near her daughter Rita Mae and husband Dick Joseph and family. She lived in her own home near Rita Mae. Lorena was an active member in all aspects of church life with the Peace Lutheran Church of Rockport, Texas, a member of the L.W. & L Group and many years of volunteering with the Cast-a-" way's in Fulton-Rockport, Texas. She was awarded the Humanitarian Award for the year 2001 for her many hours of donated work in the Volunteer Program in the city of Fulton-Rockport, Texas. Lorena died December-20, 2002, at her home in Fulton, Texas, at the age of 97 years, 9 months, 20 days. Survivors include four children--Darrell and Myra Marks, Mesa; Arizona; Robert "Bob" and Maralyn Marks, Salem, SD; Donald and Nadine Marks, Tulsa, Oklahoma; Rita Mae and Richard Joseph, Fulton, Texas. Twelve grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. One brother, Virgil Carlson and wife Gerd, Fort Collins, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Leslie, and twelve sisters and brothers.
