Note: Salem Special, Salem, South Dakota, Thursday, 7 January 1999 The funeral Mass for Francis X. Zimmer was held Wednesday, January 6, 1999 in St. Ann's Catholic Church, Humboldt, SD. Fr. James Zimmer and Msgr. Steve Barnett Concelebrated the Mass. Burial was in St. Ann's Cemetery. Pallbearers were Tim O'Hara, Tom Zimmer, Richard Szameit, Gary Ketcham, Donald Zimmer and Pat McMahon. Francis X. Zimmer, son of Steve and Theresa (Pfiefer) Zimmer was born March 27, 1908 on the family farm near Humboldt, SD. He grew up in the Humboldt area and attended school there. During W.W.II he served in the Army in the European Theater. He served with the field artillery and was a veteran of the Normandy landing and the Battle of the Bulge. After the war he attended barber school in Sioux City, Iowa and was a barber in Humboldt for a number of years before moving to Beresford, SD. He barbered there for 35 years. After retiring he moved back to Humboldt to live with his brother. Francis passed away at his home in Humboldt, SD on January 4, 1999. He had reached the age of 90 years, nine months and 7 days. He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Humboldt, and was a former member of St. Teresa's Catholic Church in Beresford, SD. Francis is survived by one sister-in-law, Lois Zimmer of Sioux Falls, SD; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers; and 6 sisters.
