Bernard and Susan Garry, with their four children, came to the Bridgewater area from Evansville, Wisconsin in 1893. A cousin, Michael Skelly, had preceded them to this region and encouraged them to follow. They settled on a farm eight miles northeast of Bridgewater, but later moved to a farm owned by Charley Gossman of Decorah, Iowa. They reared a family of nine sons and four daughters. In 1917, the parents and the six youngest moved to Yale, SD where Bernard had purchased land. John Neher was contracted to build all the farm buildings. At one time, Leo, Frank, Ray, Harry, Charley, Joe, and Grace all farmed in this area. Leo was married to Eunice Gildea, Frank Garry was married to Mary Leitheiser, Ray Garry was married to Christina Welbes, Harry Garry was married to Josephine Lanners, Charley Garry was married to Mary Quinn, Joe Garry was married to Wilma Norder and Grace Garry was married to Andrew O'Brien. All the spouses were from this area. Paul Garry married Clara Eilers, Eugene Garry was married to Thelma Haynes, Mary Garry was married to Joseph Welch, Helen Garry married Bernard Maass, all from the Yale, SD area. Merle Garry married Lena Ramp from Lead, SD. Ethel Garry never married and died in 1936. Bernard and Susan celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at St. Stephen's in 1937. Twelve of their thirteen children and forty-seven of their fifty-one grandchildren were present for this occasion. Susan died in 1939 and Bernard lived to be ninety-six years old. He was living with his daughter, Grace, in Mitchell, SD when he died in 1957. They had sixty-one grandchildren and over two hundred and fifty great-grandchildren. There are six surviving members of this family. Harry Garry resides in Salem, SD. Grace and Merele live in Mitchell, SD. Paul lives in DeSmet, SD. Helen Maass lives in Huron, SD, and Mary Welsh lives in Alameda, California. There are over four hundred and fifty direct living descendants of Bernard and Susan Garry residing in many parts of the United States at this time. From obituary of son Raymond J. Garry ---the Garry's lived in Green County, Wisconsin on 5-27-1892 when son Raymond J. Garry was born. Ten months later (March 1893) the family moved to the area of Bridgewater, South Dakota. ---Raymond Garry acquired the knowledge of crying auction sales from his father (Bernard Garry) who also was an auctioneer. ---at the time of Raymond Garry's death, his father, Bernard Garry, was a very active 88 year old who was living with his daughter, Grace O'Brien, at Mitchell, South Dakota. ---Bernard and Susan Garry had 13 children. Raymond Garry was the 3rd family member to die. He was preceded in death by his mother and a sister (Ethel) Salem Special, Aug. 15, 1996 (article on family reunion) Bernard and Susie Garry were married in Wisconsin on February 21, 1887. They moved to Bridgewater, SD. In the spring of 1893. In 1919 the family moved to a farm near Yale, SD. Susie Garry died in 1939.
