Note: The Humboldt Journal 12-7-1961 Matthew A. Burggraff, 64, well known farmer of this community, died Saturday morning at Mc Kennan Hospital in Sioux Falls after an illness of several months. Mr. Burggraff submitted to brain surgery at the University Hospital in Minneapolis the latter part of August. He suffered a heart attack following the operation and never regained his health. About seven weeks ago he was brought to the hospital in Sioux Falls for care. Funeral services were held in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wellington Township with Father T.P. Coyne officiating at the Requiem Mass. Interment was made in St. Michael's cemetery in Sioux Falls, SD. Matthew Burggraff was born 11-20-1897 at Chicago, Illinois. When a small boy, his family moved to a farm in the vicinity of Humboldt, South Dakota and has lived in this community ever since. He was married to Dorothy Kueter on 11-20-1923. Mr. Burggraff was a member of the Board of Directors of the Farmers Elevator Co. at Humboldt. He took an active part in his community affairs and was interested in better agriculture practices in which he carried out a successful farming operation with his brother Nick. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wellington Township most of his lifetime and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Marquette Council, Sioux Falls, SD. Survivors are his widow and one son, Donald Burggraff, at home; three daughters, Mrs. Joe Schartz, Hartford, SD; Mrs. Herman Plagge, and Miss LaVonne Burggraff, Sioux Falls; one brother, Nick Burggraff, Hartford, SD; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, John, in 1957.
