Note: Salem Special, Salem, SD Sept 18, 1997 Funeral services for Fern E. Schafer were held Sept 15, 1997 in the Kinzley Funeral Home, Salem, SD. Rev. Lyle Meester officiated. Burial was in the Wildwood Cemetery, Salem, SD. Pallbearers were: Richard Schafer, Dennis Schafer, Duane Schafer, Lyle Hollein, and Travis DeWitt. Fern E. Nelson, daughter of Frank R. and Alta M. (Williams) Nelson, was born Sept 7, 1917, in Salem, SD. She grew up in the Salem area and on March 20, 1944 she married Ted E. Schafer. After their marriage they lived in the Salem-Montrose area where her husband farmed. In 1971 they moved to Sioux Falls, SD and lived there until February of 1996 when they moved back to Salem. They liked to travel and spent many winters in Texas. Her husband died on June 4, 1997. Fern died on September 12, 1997, at the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls. She had reached the age of 80 years and 6 days. Survivors include: three sons, Richard of Waco, Texas; Dennis of Austin, Texas; and Duane of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Mrs. Lyle (Diane) Hollein of Athol, SD; and Mrs. Gaylen (Deb) DeWitt of Sioux Falls, SD; 11 grandchildren; one brother, Bob Nelson of Salem, SD; and two sisters, Mrs. John (Iola) Brekke and Mrs. Herman (Lola) Weber both of Salem, SD. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
