Note:   Funeral Mass for Monica McNeil will be held March 2, 2000 in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Salem, SD. Fr. Joseph Ripp will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mike McNeil, Tom Ikoehn, Jim Burg, Quinten Burg, Don Houwman, and Jim Feterl. Monica Smith, daughter of James and Margaret (O'Rourke) Smith was born June 18, 1900 in Bridgewater, SD. She grew up in Bridgewater and Salem and graduated from Salem High School. On August 18, 1926, she married John McNeil in Sioux Falls, SD. They lived their entire married lives in Salem. She taught school, helped manage a restaurant, managed the Ward Clark Hotel, and worked for the Census Bureau of the Federal Government while living in Salem, SD. Her husband died in 1974. After his death she lived in Phoenix, Arizona with her sister in the winters; and spent the summers in Salem and Mitchell, SD. She had lived in Annandale, Virginia the past year and a half. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Salem and was a former member of the St. Mary's High School Athletic Board. Monica also volunteered many hours for her church and her community. Her spare time passion was visiting family and friends and playing bridge. Monica died February 27, 2000 at the Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church, Virginia. She had reached the age of 99 years, 8 months, and 9 days. Survivors include; two sons, Jack and his wife Betty, and Bob, all of Mitchell, SD; one daughter, Georgia Ann Griffin and husband Tom of Annandale, Virginia; nine grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; a sister, Eva Smith of Holyoke, Massachusetts; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Smith of Sioux Falls, SD. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers, and four sisters.
