As a boy he was attached to the court of Prince Arthur. He was married for the first time shortly after 23 July 1505, to ELIZABETH STAFFORD, daughter of Henry Stafford, 2nd Duke of Buckingham, by Katherine Wydeville, sister to Elizabeth, Queen Consort of Edward IV, and daughter of Richard Wydeville, 1st Earl Rivers. She died before 11 May 1532. He was married for the second time, between 11 May and 1 Sep. 1532, to MARGARET STANLEY, only daughter of Thomas Stanley, Earl of Derby (descendant of King Edward I), by Anne (descendant of King Edward III), daughter of Edward Hastings, 2nd Lord Hastings (descendant of King Edward I). He was summoned to Parliament from 28 Nov. 1511 by writs directed Roberto Radclyff de FitzWater, Chivaler. He accompanied King Henry VIII on the expedition to Tournai and Th´┐Żerouanne in 1513, and attended the Field of the Cloth of Gold in 1520. He was created Earl of Sussex on 8 Dec. 1529. He was Great Chamberlain of England for life from 3 Aug. 1540. MARGARET STANLEY was living in January 1533/4, and died s.p.m., burial at St. Laurence Pountney, London. He was married for the third time on 14 Jan. 1536/7 to MARY ARUNDELL, daughter of John Arundell, of Lanherne, Cornwall, by Katherine, daughter of Thomas Grenville, Knt., of Stowe, Cornwall." "Robert Ratcliffe, earle of Sussex, of St. Lauraunce pounteney, London" died testate (P.C.C., 1 Alen) at Chelsea on 27 Nov. 1542, and was buried at St. Laurence's, but subsequently removed to Borehain, Essex (M.I.). His widow was married for the second time on 19 Dec. 1545, as his second wife, to Henry Fitz Alan, Earl of Arundel (died 24 Feb. 1579/80 s.p.m.s.) and by whom she had no issue.
