a. Note:   At the death of his father, the weak king Alaric II, in battle with Clovis I King of the Franks, Amalaric became King of the Visigoths. He went on to make peace with Clovis and married his daughter Chrotilda. As his wife was a Catholic and himself an Arian, he mistreated her very badly. In 531, she wrote to her brother Childebert I, King of Paris, and Amalaric was killed.
