Note:   DUCHESS OF NORFOLK Katharine or Katherine Nevill(e); m. 1st 2nd Duke of Norfolk of the 13 97 creation; m. 2nd before 27 Jan 1441/2 Sir Thomas Strangeways; m. 3r d after 1442, as his 2nd wife, 1st Viscount Beaumont; m. 4th just afte r 1464 Sir John Woodville, brother of Elizabeth, Queen Consort of Edwa rd IV. [Burke's Peerage] ------------------------- He [John Beaumont] married 2ndly, after 1442, Katharine, widow of Sir Thomas STRANGWAYS, and before that of JOHN (DE MOWBRAY), DUKE OF NORFO LK) and daughter of Ralph (NEVILL), EARL OF WESTMORLAND, by his 2nd wi fe, Joan DE BEAUFORT, daughter of John of Gaunt, DUKE OF LANCASTER. H e died 10 July 1460, being slain under the Lancastrian banner, at the battle of Northampton. His widow married, 4thly, shortly after 1464, S ir John WIDVILLE) who was beheaded (with his father, EARL RIVERS) at K enilworth) 12 August 1469. [Complete Peerage II:62, (transcribed by D ave Utzinger)] Note: Talk about an age difference. Katherine was probably 40 years o r more older than her 4th husband! It makes you wonder whether John W ydeville was a brother of Richard Wydeville, 1st Earl Rivers, rather t han his son. - - - - - - - The following excerpt from a post to SGM, 16 Oct 2001, by Henry Sutlif f, supports the "May-Dec" marriage of Katherine & John Wydeville: "Also, let's all not put an undue amount of emphasis on the Royal Desc ents. I cannot think of any family that made a greater effort at makin g political marriages than the Wydevilles. The suggestion that everyth ing was based on Royal Descents rather than political strategy is not correct. Both were considerations. I regret not having my notes handy , but Elizabeth Wydeville's brother John was married to Katherine Nevi lle, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk and thrice widowed. John Wydeville wa s more than 40 years her junior. This marriage had nothing to do with Royal Descents, but everything to do with politics, alliance and money ." - - - - - - - I used to mistakenly state "40 years or more younger" in the note abov e, but thanks to Pomala Black, pomalablack AT cox.net for correcting m e in the following post-em: Wasn't Katherine 40 years plus OLDER than her 4th husband rather than younger? Maybe this marriage is recorded between the wrong people. Pomala Black ------------------------- famed for having made the "Diabolical Marriage" to the young John Woodville to advance the family of his sister Elizabeth. John was 20 at his marriage; Catherine 80. Catherine Neville was last heard of at the coronation of her nephew Richard III in 1483. CATHERIE NEVILLE Lady Katherine Neville, married first on January 12, 1411 John Mowbray, 2nd Duke of Norfolk; married second Sir Thomas Strangways; married third John Beaumont, 1st Viscount Beaumont; married fourth Sir John Woodville (d. August 12, 1469). She was the daughter of Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmorland by Joan Beaufort, widow of John Mowbray, 2nd Duke of Norfolk and dowager Duchess of Norfolk. Katherine had been widowed three times and was nearly 80 years old but very wealthy. (Wikipedia) Catharine, m. John Mowbray, second Duke of Norfolk, Thomas Strangways, Viscount Beaumont, who d. in 1460 and John Wydenille, brother-in-law of Edward IV. (Dunham Genealogy English and American Branches of the Dunham Family) Katherine Neville or Catherine de Neville (c. 1397-c. 1483) was the eldest daughter of Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmorland (1364?-1425) and Joan Beaufort (c.1379-1440), daughter of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster by his mistress (later, 3rd wife) Catherine de Roet. Katherine was married firstly to John Mowbray, 2nd Duke of Norfolk (1392-1432). Their only known child was John de Mowbray, 3rd Duke of Norfolk (1415-1461). Katherine married secondly, Thomas Strangeways (c.1395-before 1442) - they had 2 daughters. She married 3rdly John, Viscount Beaumont, who was killed in 1460. Her 4th and last marriage was infamous, and known by contemporaries as the 'diabolical marriage' - she married John Woodville, brother of Elizabeth Woodville, Edward IV's queen. He would have been barely 20 at the time of their marriage - she in her mid to late 60s. Yet she survived even him as he was executed in 1469 during the brief period of time that her nephew - Richard, Earl of Warwick (The 'Kingmaker') had usurped the authority of the crown. She was still alive in 1483, having survived all the descendents of her first marriage. (Wikipedia) Source: R. C. Karnes, Rootsweb.com Updated January 2008
