Notes
a. Note:   Fulk II of Anjou, son of Fulk the Red, was count of Anjou from 941 to 95 8. He was often at war with the Bretons. He seems to have been a man of cu lture, a poet and an artist. In 958 he was succeeded by Geoffrey Greymantl e. [jweber.ged] The following was given in a post-em by Curt Hofemann, curt_hofemann AT yahoo.com: ID: I00387 Foulques II "Le Bon" Comte d' Anjou (son) Foulques Seigneur de Briole b: ABT 941 in Anjou/Pays-de-la-Loire, France In addition to Weis AR7, other sources for this individual are: ES III:116 ES XIV:116 Leo van de Pas' Genealogics: http://www.genealogics.org/getperson.php?personID=I00020237&tree=LEO Miroslav Marek (Genealogy.eu) = ES sourced Moriarty Plantagenet p4 Paget p139 Paul Theroff database Roglo database Tapsell p203] Tompsett (Hull database) Turton p6, 180 etc, Watney #9 I have been following with interest your Beauvau > Briole line. I cannot confirm nor debunk the line up to Foulque II "le Bon", 3rd Comte de Anjou & Gerberge de Gatinais, but at that point there is a problem. I'm afraid no son of this couple named Foulques Seigneur de Briole is given in any of these sources. I found the connection on several websites but they are all unsourced. Sebastian Tuszynski 25 Jul 2000 msg to SGM, Subject: "A few French question", asked about this filiation (& numerous others). Unfortunately the only response did not address this particular question. Note when researching this on the net, apparently Briole is Briollay at many websites & on WorldConnect. This filiation, without any reliable source to confirm it, appears to be an invention. I would love to hear from anyone reading this post-em who is willing provide any sourced info pro or con. Jim, as an active member, perhaps another query to SGM will get a response this time. A little (not much) more on Foulque/Fulk: Fulk II, Comte d'Anjou [Ref: Turton p6] Count of Anjou [Ref: Weis AR7 118:20, Weis MC5 53:21] 941-958: Count of Anjou [Ref: Tapsell p203] 940-962 (or 942-960): 3rd Count of Anjou, [Ref: McBride: Vol I File 9: The Paternal Ancestry of Homer Beers James] ..and under his successor, Fulk II the Good, the destruction caused by the preceding wars was repaired. [Ref: Ency Britannica] According to legend, he was learned and saintly, dressed as a cleric and said of Louis IV, King of France, who had mocked his piety, 'an illiterate king is a crowned ass'. [Ref: Leo van de Pas' Genealogics citing: Paget] Note: "a man of wit, but perhaps lacking in tact - Louis IV was not the fool his father, Charles III "the Simple", has been profiled to have been" Curt Alas, I no longer have access to a terrific source which may/may not have more to say about Foulques II: "Fragmentum historieae Andegavensis" (Fragments of a History of the Counts of Anjou) From 'Chroniques des comtes d'Anjou et des seigneurs d'Amboise' by Count Fulk le Rechin 1096 (Louis Kalpen and Rene Poupardin), 1913, Paris. Should you find access to the UCLA library which probably has it, you will find this source that may have more to say about Foulques II. If memory serves me right Fulk "le Rechin" wrote many things modern scholars dispute, but he was at least contemporary, though obviously, he may have embellished a thing or two about his ancestry.
