In the 1862-63 and 1866-67 and 1868-69 Williams Directory of Dayton, Ohio, he was listed as having a grocery or being a grocer at 219 Main Street. In 1868-69, his father Egidius, lived with him. In the 1870 census he is listed as a wood turner (day work) age 28 and born in Hesse Darmstadt. He, his wife Mary age 21 and their son John 10 months, lived with his father and stepmother. The census was taken in May. In 1877 their address is given as 201 Prairie (Perry?) St. in Dayton, Ohio. The following article appeared in the Dayton Daily New July 4, 1922: Egidius Wenz of 203 South Perry street celebrated his 80th birthday anniversary Sunday at "Shady Bank" the summer home of William Bossmann and Louis J. Wenz on the Old Troy Pike. Mr. Wenz was 80 years old July 5. Seventy five years ago he came to Dayton by canal boat from Piqua to make his home. Children of Mr and Mrs. Wenz present at the celebration and their families included: Mr and Mrs. Frank Bucher, Loretta, Walter, Florence, Irene, Francis, Alma and Richard Bucher; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Deis, Leona, Walter, Alberta, Lucille, Dorotha, Marcella, and Alfred Deis; Mr, And Mrs. Dan Trick, Rosemarie, Rita, Louise, Vincent, Margery and Norbert Trick; Mr and Mrs. Charles Amann, Edward, Charles, Ohmer, Mary Cristine, Eileen and Victor Amann. Egidius Wenz, 91, a resident of Dayton for many years died Monday a 5 p.m. at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Trick, 720 Troy st., where he had been living during the past five years. Born in Gernzheim, Germany, he came to America with his parents when he was six years of age. A short time later he settled in Dayton. His marriage to Mary Anne Christ occurred here in 1868. She preceded him in death five years ago. He was a faithful member of Emmanuel church for 80 years. Recently he had been going to Our Lady of the Rosary church. Six of the 10 children born to him and his wife survive. They are Mrs. Katherine Bucher, Joseph Wenz, Mrs. Mary Deis, Mrs. Elizabeth Trick, Edward Wenz and Mrs. Carrie Amann; 30 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Katie's birth date is on her funeral card and 1870 is on her tombstone.
