Notes
a. Note:   *** Source Katholische Kirche Gernsheim Parish - Microfilm #948722, (Taufen, Heiraten 1652-1723 Taufen 1724-1806), p 259 Baptismal Records 1756 [Februarius] 2 Philippus filius legitmis Joes Valentine Civis et Catharina n. Schnatzin conjngus levante Philippus Gadlahr cinc. There is a bit of a mystery here. Philip's baptimal record is very clearly from 1756 and it states that his mother Catharine has the maiden name of Schnatz (n. Schnatzin). In 1756, Valentine Wenz was married to Catharine Lauth. The marriage record for Valentine Wenz and Catherine Schnatz is clearly from 1760, 4 years after Philip's birth at which he is declared legitimate (filius legitimus). The Marriage record reads as follows: October 8 Valentinus Wentz honestus Viduus et civis matrimonio fuentus suit in p. honesta virgine Catharina D'ni Martini Schnatz filia. test D'no Godjahr senatore et Joe Schnatz In this it is stating that Valentine is a widower (viduus) and that Catharine is a respectable maiden (honesta virgine). It seems odd that they would use such language if they had a child out of wedlock. With further analysis of the baptismal records, it appears that the "n. Schnatzin" was added at a later time since 1) it s further into the right edge of the sheet than any other entry on the page, to the point that it is running off the edge and 2) none of the other entries on the page are indicating the maiden name of the mother. I have chosen to place Philip as the son of Catharine Lauth. Philip's marriage record bears this out since it states "fil: leg: Valentini Wenz & Catharina nata Lauthin"
