Pingree and Susan operated a grain mill, and a post office in the Pigeon River Valley. Susan was postmistress of the Lavinia post office until the town of Sunburst was built and a larger post office was established there. The Lavinia post office was in a little one-room building at the front gate to their home. When they built a new house a hundred yards down the road, the post office was located in one room of the new house. About 1932, Pingree's house burned, destroying all his personal belongings. He and Ben's family rebuilt on the site during the next year. Pingree Inman was named after Pingree Plott, son of Jonathan Plott. He had thirteen children, all of whom lived to adulthood. He was a prosperous farmer and a good manger. By middle age he had accumulated an estimated 500 to 600 acres of land which extended from the Pigeon river to the U. S. Government line on the Lickstone Bald. He operated a grain mill and had seven or eight tenant houses on his property. (from History of the Inman Family, page 47.)
