Note: ! The Hiett and Fichter Families of Brown CO., Ohio by Bruce Grimes. John left Scotland on 6 Jun 1849 going to N.Y. and then to Buffalo down the Ohio R. to Ripley in Aug 6, 1850 (I think) He and Isabella were members of the Huntington Presyterian Church of which he was a trustee (although he and Isabella and some of their children are buried in the Hiett Chapel Cem.) He was Township trustee and served on the School Board. He and his brother, thomas, seem highly regarded. On Aug 4, 1870 (Census Huntington Twp.) he has a farm worth $14,000 and personal property of 2,000. He's 47 and Isabella is 37. In August 1989, I spoke with Lorena Dummond who was born Lorena (Tiny) Cooper, she was 80 years old, and living in Hiett, Huntington township, Brown Co., Ohio. About the Buchanan brothers she said: John Buchanan, who married Isabella Hiett, lost his farm to a bad debt, Isabella was very surprised and upset. They had to mvoe into James Buchanan's (their son's) house in Hiett. Lorena lamented to me that recently the John Buchanan farm and house was bought by a wealthy Cincinnati doctor, who is letting it sit abandoned as a speculation property. Thomas Buchanan's farm burned down. He and his wife, Ellen Hiett, moved to Ripley, and their son, William took over the farm.
