Note: His military service number was #S16214, Rank Private. He enlisted first time 7/18/1776, served in Captain Moses Newell's company statined on Plum Island at mouth of Newbury River near the fort for defence of the seacost. On 7/3/11780 he enlisted second time and was in Capt. Richard Titcomb's company, Col. Nathaniel Wade's regiment. Passed down through geneerations is story that Stephen Norton actually saw General George Washington at West Point. Stephen discharge 1010/1780 and enlisted third time under Capt. Darius David marched to Rhode Island where the battle of Rhode Island was fought and was there for General Sullivan's defeat. lIn total he served 12 1/2 months. He was awarded pension of $44.65 per year and received a total of $135.95 before his death about 2 years later.
On 5/7/1805 he bought part of Whitehead Island in the town of St. George, Knox County, Maine from his father-in-law Stephen Peabody for $80.00, In 1828 he sold the island to son Joseph.
