Emanuel E. was constable in Shamokin (died in 37). He was not well liked, because at that time, the coal barons made the
poor miners work very hard & took all their money in the general store
they provided for them also housing, so the constables were very mean,
nasty rotten men. If you get the picture.
The "Coal Barons" were/are greedy people who don't care about their
workers or anything else. Just read up on the "Molly Maguires" & you'll
get the picture of what it was like living, working, growing up in the
Anthracite Region of Pa. In www.coalregion.com under links, there are
numerous articles about the Mollies. Also plenty of books were written
about them. The landowners claim the Mollies were outlaws, renegades &
the Molies claim the owners were ruthless cut throats.
