On November 2, 1837, he bought 80 acres of land from the U.S. Government in Howard County, Missouri, north of the Missouri River, certificate no. 8927, signed by President Martin Van Buren. On January 10, 1840 he bought another 40 acres of land from the government in Howard County, Missouri, north of the Missouri River, certificate no. 13986, signed by President Van Buren. On April 15, 1853, he bought 79.86 acres of land from the government in Johnson County, Missouri, certificate no. 33016, signed by President Franklin Pierce. On November 15, 1854 he bought two 40 acre parcels of land from the government in Bates County, Missouri, certificates no. 38786 and 38787, both signed by President Pierce.
