Note: William was a descendent of both Alfred the Great and Charlemagne. He was the illegitimate son of Robert, Duke of Normandy, and the beautiful French girl, Herleve. He invaded England and defeated King Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Though he conquered England, he never learned to speak English. On December 25, 1066, he became King of England at Westminster Abbey, London, England. He inaugurated the Feudal system in England. He had all land listed for taxation on "The Doomsday Book." He confiscated lands to create the New Forest. He was a bald fat man with an enormous stomach, which King Philippe I of France made a matter of jest. William then burn Mantes, France in retaliation. His horse stepped on a hot coal and threw him against the wall. He died from his injuries six weeks later.
