Left Showhegan, Maine as a young man. He worked his way westward, in Vermont, New York and in Wisconsin where he worked one winter in the woods and then drove cut of timber down the Wisconsin River. From the Mississippi River he worked his wa y up to St. Paul on a freight steamer. He went to Minneapolis and worked one season for a Mr. Blaisdell. Then with Hiram Walker and the James boys and others he took a land claim five miles below Hutchinson. Before his claim was approved he enlist ed in the Military Service, Company B, Fourth Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, where he became a Corporal in the Color Guard. Hewas wounded in the right groin by a spent bullet at the Battle of Corinth, and sent to the hospital at Fort Snelling. Her e he met Maria Bartlett Nash, a nurse, and they were married 2/16/1864 while he was still in the service. After being discharged, they went to McCloud County where he found his land claim had been jumped, so he took a soldier's land claim just nor th of the Nash farm. Later he sold the land and bought a store in Glencoe, then sold it and bought a store ib Stewart, and later moved to the Nash farm as his home.
