In an email dated 11/19/2001 from Robert L. Williams:
Herman Elijah Barnard was called, "Barnard" by everyone who knew him. I first met him in 1969 when I moved to Yadkinville, NC. Barnard was born about 1904, when he was 20 or 21 years old U.S. he left Patrick County, Virginia and moved to Yadkinville.
He once told me that when he came to Yadkinville he had nothing but but the clothes he was wearing. He took a job with the local bank, The Bank of Yadkin, as a janitor. He eventually took on additional duties assisting in the bookkeeping department.
Barnard knew the value of a penny. He saved his money and began to buy stock in the bank. He also took on additional duties and learned banking. By 1950 he owned 51 percent of the bank and became Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. His wife, Edith was Cashier. In 1969 he sold the bank to Central Carolina Bank. I was working for CCB at that time and came to Yadkinville as manager.
When Barnard died his Estate was valued at $11 million. He loved his Bourbon, and drank it with a little bit of hot water. He was one of the more interesting characters I have met in my life. He was a good man and I am thankful that I had the privilege of knowing him. is NOT responsible for the content of the GEDCOMs uploaded through the WorldConnect Program.
