Notes
a. Note:   Christian Kolb Shantz was born at Walkerton, Waterloo County, Ontario. There he met and married Mary Hutchinson who had come with her parents from her birthplace, Aberdeen Scotland, at the age of 9 years. Mr and Mrs Shantz left Ontario and moved to Kansas in the USA and later moved from there to Scotland North Dakota. In those two states, twelve children were born to them. In June of 1892 Christian and his son Josiah made a journey to Wetaskiwin Alberta Canada following the eldest son Benjamin, who set out in March of that year. After looking over the country Christian and Josiah filed on a homestead and built a log house on the S.W. 12-45-23-W4 near the Battle River. In September they retraced their journey as far as Winnipeg where they met up with the rest of the family. In Winnipeg Mr. Shantz purchased a democrat car which was the first and only one in the district for some time. The family soon arrived at there new homestead. The only other white settlers in the area arrived the year before the Shantzs in 1891. The Shantz family was known for their kindness to all new comers and the door was always open to any stranger who needed a stopping place. They would often give strangers wheat to help them get started on there new land. The R.N.W.M.P. often made there headquarters at the Shantz home. They also helped build the first school, and improved the roads. Mr. and Mrs. Shantz spent their later years in Wetaskiwin until 1929. They both lived to be over 90 years. Early in 1929 Mr Shantz passed away and Mrs Shantz followed him within two weeks. Two children died in infancy but they raised ten children who grew up in the province of Alberta.
