Note: ted in the 1824 Land Assessment records (Ontario Archives Film M7739) for Cramahe Twp, Newcastle District, with "one horse" and no family or property. It is likely he is residing with another family, but no lot or concession is indicated. However, by 1826 he is listed with "two stone horses" used to grind grain and is Assessed 16 Pounds for the year. From the 1839 Cramahe Twp Census records, "Doctor" Gilchrist appears as follows: 2M<16 yrs, 1M>16 yrs, 3F<16 yrs, 2F>16yrs Possibly children from a previous marriage, other family members or servants were living with Matthew and Eliza. As well, Alexander Gilchrist appears in this same census with a wife and two children under 16 yrs (one boy and one girl). Ont. Surrogate Court Recrods, 1793 - 1858 Ont. Archives Film: GS2 Reel 116, p. 64 - 66 Year of Probate: 1850 "Surrogate Court - United Counties of Northumberland & Durham Probate of the last Will and Testament of Mathew Craig Gilchrist of the Township of Cramahe in the said District, in the words following, to wit: In the name of God, Amen. I, Mathew Craig Gilchrist of Colborne, in the Township of Cramahe County of Northumberland and Province of Canada, Physician, being of weak body but of sound and perfect mind and soundly blessed be Almighty God for the same, do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner and form (?) following - (that is to say) - First, after all say just and lawful debts and demands are paid, I will and bequeath to my only son Charles and to his heirs of his body, for and during the term of his (and their) natural life (or lives) all the rents, profits and residue of my Gains, being the north part of lot number twenty-three in the first concession of the Township of Cramahe aforesaid. Then the said farm to be equally divided between my three surviving children and their heirs of their bodies forever. Secondly, I will and bequeath all the remainder of my property, real as well as personal to be equally divided between my three surviving children, each to receive (? word) respective share, or portion at the time of their becoming of age to (? word) and their heirs and survivors forever - and I do hereby appoint Joseph Keeler of Colborne (my brother in law) to be the sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament. I do hereby revoke all former wills by me made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, the fourth day of April in the year of our Lord one Thousand Eight hundred and Fifty.
