The Clarion Republican-Gazette - October 20, 1887 While the people were paying their last sad respects to the remains of Mr. Stewart, conveying them to the train at noon, they were startled by loud cries of someone in distress. Large numbers rushed in the direction of the river, from which place the cries emanated and found a small flat boat upturned and six struggling men in the river close to the first pier. The men were in the employ of the P & WRR (Pennsylvania & Western Railroad) and were engaged in rip-rapping* the pier. The wind was blowing quite hard and the boat had begun to rock, frightening the men, who began to catch at the sides of the boat which was then over-balanced. Two brothers, named Jacob and Henry Nevil, both residents of St. Petersburg, were unable to swim and were drowned before help could reach them. Three of the other four made their way to the pier, while the fourth was picked up nearly exhausted, clinging to the bottom of the upturned boat. It was a very narrow escape for hm as one minute more and he woud have been obliged to have loosened his hold on the boat. His name is William McCoy, resident of East Foxburg. The other three men were Joseph Morgan, William Foust and William Gray. Efforts were made at once to recover the bodies of the men drowned. About five o'clock, Henry was found and at ten o'clock this morning, Jacob was brought to the surface. The former was unmarried, while the latter leaves a wife and seven children. *putting down large rocks to stabilize a bank or ditch.
