They were of substantial means at that time. They lived on a huge hill in a large brick house. It is thought that the house still remains and the hill is known as Barrett Hill. The Children, in order of age, were: Ann, John, William, Jane, Joseph and Thomas. Of these children, Ann and Jane married and stayed in Pennsylvania. William died there.'

'Thomas Barrett, Sr., was a member of the aristocracy in England, a graduate of Oxford College and by profession a civil engineer, which profession he followed after coming to this county. He was accidentally drowned in the Susquehanna River when his son, Thomas, was 17 years old, the lad thus early being completely orphaned, for his mother had died when he was seven years of age.'
