Following was written by daughter, Ruby O'Neil abt 1952, "Our beloved wife and mother, Mrs. Daisy Belle O'Neil, was born Aug 20, 1885 at Fort Wayne Indiana in a log cabin. Her parents were George Henning and Alice Catherine Henning. She was raised and educated by her grandparents, as her mother died when she was two weeks old. She came to Kansas in 1887 and was brought up on her grandfather's homestead farm near Chase, Kansas. Later she moved to Plevna, Kansas, where she met and wed her husband, Hugh O'Neil. She moved to Hutchinson, Kansas, in 1904, and bore a family of two sons and six daughers. She was our pillar of strength and wisdom, and made many sacrifices in behalf of her family. She will be sorely missed not only by her family, but by many friends and neighbors, as well. She is survived by her husband, Hugh O'Neil; one son, Wilbur O'Neil; and five daughters; Miss Ruby O'Neil, Miss Nella O'Neil, Mrs Harold M. Birket, Miss Maxine O'Neil, and Mrs Kenneth A. Smith."
From letter written by Nella O'Neil Hamrick, Feb 26, 1982."Then your grandmother[Daisy Henning] met your grandfather [Hugh O'Neil] in Plevna, Kansas, She used to walk past the livery barn on her way to church on Sunday mornings and would wink at him in passing by. One Sunday he waited outside for her and walked her home. At first her granfather frowned upon this romance, because her beau was a divorced man, but later decided it was all right."
My grandmother, Daisy Belle Henning O'Neil, had brown eyes, dark hair and high cheekbones. As I was 11 yrs when she passed away, my memories of her are dim. And to me she always looked old and tired. I can't remember her smiling she always looked stern. Her last home in Hutchinson KS was two bedrooms, livingroom and kitchen. There was a bed in the livingroom that folded down from the wall that had a feather mattress. In the kitchen was a wood cooking stove. There was no running water in her house. The water pump was out back as was the out house. She had a lovely yard with flowers. As the family gathered in her house after her death, there were whispers. Some questions of how she died. Was she taking drugs started years ago for pain?
