Notes
a. Note:   According to the diary of the Lutheran minister Rev. Johann G. Arends, Catherine was christened on 9 June 1776. He also recorded her birthplace as York, Pennsylvania. The census shows Valentine Cline over the age of 45, his wife under 45. They had a male, no doubt Andrew, between 16 and 26, two daughters between 16 and 10, three daughters and two sons under 10 years of age. The will of Gertrout Cline, dated 27 January 1820, was probated in Lincoln County, North Carolina in July 1822. Gertrout lists Peggy Tucker, Uly Finger, Polly Abernethy, Gertrude Cline, daughter of my son Andrew, daughter Catherine Miller and her daughter Gertrodt, son Martin. My children Andrew and Philip; Eave Abernathy and Uly Finger. Her brother Philip Cansler served as executor. Philip's son Henry Cansler witnessed the will. Born in York County, Pennsylvania in July 1762, Anna Gertrout Cansler was the second of ten children born to Philip W. Gentzler and Uly Wintermyer. Anna was five years old, when her parents moved by Conestoga wagon to North Carolina. Around 1780, she would marry a "Volentine Klein." They would have ten children together between 1782 and 1800. Anna is referred to as "Catherine" by her father, in his 1804 will. She would sign for her share of his estate as "Gertrude Glain," but is listed on the estate settlement as Gertrude Cline. Anna Gertrout Cansler Cline would survive her husband by some twenty years.
Catherine Finger is listed as the head of household. She is listed with one boy and five girls. Referred to as "Katie" in her father's 1804 will, Maria Catherine Cansler was the third of ten children born to Philip W. Gentzler and Uly Wintermyer. Katy was born on her parent's York County, Pennsylvania farm in July 1762. She was four years old when her family moved to the wilderness lands of what would become Lincoln County, North Carolina. Around 1783, she married a Leeper's Creek neighbor, John Finger. She and John would have six children together between 1788 and 1799. John Finger died around 1799, and, in March 1804, Katie married the widower of her younger sister, Mary Cansler. Gerhard Garding brought four children to their union. By 1811, Katie and Gerhard had relocated to what would become McDowell County, North Carolina.
