With a large family to feed, on a small 80 acre farm, day-to-day living was a chore for the widow and the children. Having milk cows and other livestock helped. The children didn't get much formal education because of working the farm and working at other farms. Lydia married a widower with three children. She later bore one child of her own. She was a housewife, sometimes working, during the depression, as a day laborer, picking farm produce. During the war years she worked at a furniture factory. She cared deeply for her family and was very close to her sisters and brothers.
