I am Phillip Clark, and my mother, Connie Inez Hiatt Clark, happens to be here today. She is the daughter of Ephraim Arister Hiatt, 9th son of Jesse Lafayette Hiatt and Susan Midkiff Hiatt. He came from a family of 11 children, five brothers and five sisters. He was born November 6, 1887 in Mount Airy, Surry County, North Carolina. He met his companion, Bertha Alice Lowe, near Long Hill, Surry Co., NC and later married her December 11, 1910 in Mount Airy, Surry Co., NC. They were the parents of three children. One was adopted. Ephraim lived in the Holly Springs area. He bought land in a valley on Stoney Creek near his father and built his home there when he was 20 years of age in 1910. He earned his living farming such as tobacco. He raised vegetables for food to eat, like wheat, fruit, corn, watermelons, cantaloupes, and other vegetables. Grandpa was Baptized a member of the L.D.S. Church on January 26,1913. He was a very religious man. He loved his faith. He never missed a Sunday. He was honest, and hard working. My mother told me many times that once he dug a hole so deep at his father’s home he couldn’t get out of it. His family had to pull him out. That showed how much he didn’t mind hard work. Mother also told me many times he used to climb with his brother, Uncle Jesse Lee Hiatt, up in their father’s peach tree to the top, and Uncle Wilford told on them. Jess & Eph up in the peach tree. And Grandpa was Sunday School Superintendent November 20th, 1938 until January 31, 1946. He loved to play baseball. He pitched left handed. I’ve heard from many of family and friends that he could have been good enough to play in the major leagues baseball team. He also loved to sit on the front porch and sing church hymns and read scriptures. He would take his children to the fair every year and trips to the mountains. He would take his children rides in his horse and buggy to see Grandmother’s sister at Mountain Park on the other side of Dobson. My Grandfather loved the Gospel. He believed in God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost. He had a lot of faith. He believed in tithing very strongly. My mother told me he told Grandmother and his children they were so dear to him. He was so kind. He never yelled at anyone. Ephraim Arister Hiatt died February 2, 1952 and was buried near his home on February 3, 1952 at the Hiatt Cemetery on Sheep Farm Road in Holly Springs, Surry County, NC.
