Text:   Ce recensement est extrait de l'étude de Nicole T.BUJOLD et MauriceCAILLEBEAU, "Les origines françaises des premières familles acadiennes"éditée par le Conseil Général de la Vienne en1979. The 1678 census of Acadia presented in the following eight messages was publishedin the "French Canadian and Acadian Genealogical Review", Volume VII, No. 1, Spring 1979, pp. 47-66.It was translated into English for publication by Rev. Clarence J. d'Entremont. He has inserted some comments insquare brackets [ ] to clarify portions of the census. The original article was profusely footnoted. I have removedall of his notes as to the possible identification of the children in the census, but have left his estimate asto each child's year of birth following their age as it appears in the census, but have left his estimate as toeach child's year of birth following their age as it appears in the census. These years did NOT appear in the census. From his comparison to the census of 1671 and 1686, he had determined that this census was possibly taken in thelater part of 1678, but more likely in the early part of 1679. <b>Column (a) is the age according to the 1678 census. Column (b) is the birth year, calculated from the 1678 census. Column (c) is the name of the child according to the censuses in whichthe name occurs. Column (d) is the birth year, calculated from the 1671 census. Column (e) is the birth year, calculated from the 1686 census.</b> Taken by Monsieur De Meulles, Intendant of New France and Acadia at the beginning of 1686 Taken by Monsieur De Meulles, Intendant of New France and Acadia at the beginning of 1686

Note continued:   n of the Acadian Census of 1678 was published in the French Canadian and Acadian Genealogical Review in Spring issue, Volume II, No. 1, 1979 on pages 47-66. (At the time, Father d'Entremont was living in Fairhaven, Massachusetts.) <p> Father d'Entremont correlated the census records and estimated the birth dates of each child in this census. Father d'Entremont's footnotes as to the origin of each child are quite extensive and could not be added to this page though they will perhaps be added to another page as an addendum to this information in the future. However, it should be said that the years that Father d'Entremont assigns to each child did not appear in the actual census but certainly facilitates an understanding of the census itself. <p> He further ascertains that in comparing the census of 1671 to the census of 1686, that this census was possibly taken in the latter part of 1678, but more likely in the early part of 1679. he beginning of 1686

Notes
a. Note:   NGE; Vol . XXIII, no. 4 (Oct 1994); p. 118; Ed Barrieau submitted these, verified by the Centre d'Etudes Acadiennes. "Jean BLANCHARD married to Radegonde LAMBERT was the first BLANCHARD, and Guillaume was his son, not his father. Bona Arsenault confused several items and 'created' a father."
<i>"Acadian Origins: According to the Depositions Made by Their Descendants at Belle-Ile-en-Me r in 1767,"</i> Stephen A. White, 17 Jan 2005. Note: Posted on website of Lucie LeBlanc Consentino: "Jean BLANCHARD came from France with his wife, according to Jean LeBlanc, husband of his great-granddaughter Françoise BLANCHARD. However, his name is mistakenly given as Guillaume, with a wife Huguette POIRIER [sic]."
Listed in Port Royal Census of 1671 (Ref. "THE ACADIAN MIRACLE" by Dudley J. LEBLANC, pp. 21-25): Jean BLANCHARD, 60, wife, Radagonde LAMBERT; children: Martin 24 , Madeline 28, Anne 26, Guillaume 21, Bernard 18, Marie 15; cattle 12, sheep 9.
May be the BLANCHARD recorded by Bona Arsenault in "History of the Acadians" as having come from La Rochelle, France, in 1636 on the "Saint-Jehan", the first ship to bring French families to Acadia.
Found in 1671 census of Port Royal, Acadia, with wife Radegonde LAMBERT; children: Martin, 24; Madeline, 28; Anne, 26; Guillaume , 21; Bernard, 18; Marie, 15; 12 cattle and 9 sheep. [The Acadia n Miracle, pg. 22]
Listed in the 1678 Acadian census as having 6 acres, 17 cattle, 1 gun, 2 boys and 1 girl. Personal Family History! AFN: 8XXS-8R.[Aucoin.ged]
