Architect and sculptor Oscar Stonorov was born in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany, the son of Helene Traub and engineer Gregor Stonorov. The younger Stonorov studied at the University of Florence, Italy (1924/15) and the University of Zurich (1925-1928), and apprenticed with French sculptor Aristide Maillol. In 1928, he worked in the office of Andre Lurcat in Paris, France, and emigrated to the United States in 1929.
Chiefly known as a housing specialist, Stonorov designed a number of modern housing ventures in the Philadelphia area, including the Carl Mackley Houses (1933-34, in association with Alfred Kastner and W. Pope Barney), Schuylkill Falls Housing, and Carver Court (Coatesville, PA, in association with Louis I. Kahn and George Howe). His partnership with Alfred Kastner (Kastner & Stonorov) was apparently brief (1932-1935), but in 1957 he established a partnership (Stonorov & Haws) which would continue for some years. is NOT responsible for the content of the GEDCOMs uploaded through the WorldConnect Program.
