He had a a "full farm" (Vollwirtschaft); he liked to follow the news; he also kept a complete daily diary on climatic conditions, about the beginning of seeding time, and about the various crop yields, etc. He was good at predicting weather conditions. He kept records for over 40 years. He had a modest collection of books. He and his wife wrote many letters and cards to their children.
