a. Note:   Randall Pappel, 82, of Altona formerly of Halbstadt, passed away Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at Altona Health Care Centre. He is survived by his wife Helen, 5 sons and their families. The funeral service for Randall Pappel will be held Sunday, 2pm`at Bergthaler Mennonite Church, Altona with burial at Altona Cemetery. Viewing will be at Wiebe Funeral Home, Altona today and tomorrow from 9am to 9pm, Saturday from 9am to 6pm, and prior to the service. Donations may be made to Canadian Food Grains Bank.   Randall Pappel aged 82 years of Altona, MB and formerly of Halbstadt, MB passed away at the Altona Health Care Centre on February 10, 2009. Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife Helen; his five sons Jerry (Sally), Rick (Paulette), Ken, Ron (Claudette Schellenberg), Laverne (Kim); 15 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, February 15, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bergthaler Mennonite Church in Altona, MB with interment to follow in the Altona Cemetery. Viewing will be held at Wiebe Funeral Home, Altona on Friday, February 13, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Saturday, February 14, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and at the church prior to the service.   Randall Pappel, age 82 of Altona, passed away February 10, 2009 at 11:39 p.m. in the Altona Hospital, after an 8-1/2 month battle with leukemia. Dad was born on December 12, 1926. His parents were Leo and Anna Pappel. Dad grew up and went to school in Straussberg. Dad was baptized in the Lutheran Church as an infant, and was baptized a second time in the Halbstadt Church prior to his marriage. He married Helen Hildebrand on July 29, 1948. After they were married they lived with Dad's parents for a short while, then bought a farm at Ridgeville and in 1955 bought a farm in Halbstadt where they farmed until their retirement in 1997. Dad was a farmer all his life and even after retiring and moving to Altona in 1997 he continued working on Jerry's farm. In January, 2009 Mom and he moved to their current home in Buffalo Place. Besides farming Dad also enjoyed serving his community through many organizations. These included farming government, church, school, seniors, financial and many volunteer organizations. Recently he received an award from the Manitoba Council on Aging for "going above and beyond to help seniors in his community. Dad also loved sports, especially hockey, curling, and baseball both as a participant and spectator. Randall is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helen, and his five sons: Jerry and Sal Pappel, Halbstadt; Rick and Paulette Pappel, St. Pierre; Ken Pappel, Altona; Ron Pappel and Claudette Schellenberg, Altona; Laverne and Kim Pappel, Steinbach; 15 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings: Leonard and Tina Pappel, Emerson; Gordon and Esther Pappel, Altona; Deanna and George Sawatzky, Niverville; and Darlene and Ted Klassen, Neubergthal. He was predeceased by his parents, and his sister Adeleine. Funeral services were held at the Bergthaler Church in Altona on February 15, 2009. Interment was at the Altona Cemetery. Wiebe Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Bueddefeld and staff at the Altona Hospital, Canadian Blood Services, Terry and Corey of Wiebe Funeral Home. Also to the many, many people who have shown their support in various ways in the past months. You helped make a difficult time a little brighter. Thanks and may God bless you. The Pappel family.
