He was born about 1740 in England. In 1768 he married Lucretia (Lorania) Howell and moved to the Mohawk Valley where he became a tenant of Sir William Johnson. In June 1776 Sir John (Sir William's son) learned that an American force was on its way to capture him because of his Loyalist activities. He gathered about 200 able-bodied men from amongst his tenants and set out on the tremendous trek over the Adirondacks for Montreal. The journey took 19 days. Sir John was commissioned by Sir Guy Carleton to raise the first battalion of a regiment to be known as the King Royal Regiment of New York (KRRNY). The regiment took no active engagements that summer, but employed the time in constructing quarters in the Montreal area where they spent the winter of 76/77. Joseph Morden died at the encampment of smallpox 24 November, 1777."
