Elizabeth Sweat: Birth: ABT 1697.

Note: N1 In 1888 Benjamin Swett (1806-1894) wrote a letter to his cousin James Swett outlining their family history: "The Swett family of New England emigrated from the Isle of Guernsey and landed at Newburyport in 1630. In 1670 two of these Swetts emigrated to Cape Cod, one settled in Wellfleet and one in Truro. Their names were Noah and Benjamin. Benjamin settled in Wellfleet. Noah in Truro. Our race descended from Benjamin." These statements are not supported by any kind of documentation that I have been able to find.
John Swett of Newbury is documented as the ancestor of the Swett family of New England, but there is no indication that he ever lived on the Isle of Guernsey, or that he had a son or grandson named Noah, or that anyone named Swett was living on Cape Cod as early as 1670.
On 12 June 1711 John Sweat was one of 26 men who signed a "Certificate relating to the appointment of John Doane as agent for Billingsgate Village in Eastham to approach the General Court regarding their sufferings." [Massachusetts Archives, Vol. 113, page 606]
Everett S. Stackpole's Swett Genealogy (Appendix) has: "John Sweet, or Sweat, was living in Eastham, Mass., as early as 1696. He died intestate about 1714, for July 7th of that year his widow, Mary, was made administratrix on his estate. At division of estate in 1721 the following children are named, vis., Benjamin 'now the oldest son,' Solomon, Elizabeth Lewis, Mary Sweet, Sarah Sweet, and Hannah Sweet. He is called Sweat in the inventory. Joseph Sweat, probably another son, was drowned, 29 Nov. 1716. -- See Probate Records of Barnstable County and also Diary of Dea. Moses Paine of Truro."
This John Sweat who died in 1714 is documented as the ancestor of the Sweat-Swett family of Cape Cod. He is the only possible connection with the Swetts of Newbury. He may have been a descendant of John Swett of Newbury, but his lineage is unknown. An LDS Ancestral file posted by Joyce Wilman Hutchinson has him as "John Swett born about 1669 in Nantucket" and this is definitely possible even though there is nothing about him in the Nantucket VR under any variant spelling of the surname.
