Note:   On 17 April 1873 Jan Roest and his wife Celia and their sixchildren (they were to have two more) arrived in New York City.Jan and his brother Gerrit and his wife Geertruida and theirthree children had embarked some weeks earlier from theNetherlands port of Rotterdam. they had traveled aboard theship MAAS (Netherlands / American Steam Navigation Company)traveling third class-steerage- which is listed as the spacebetween decks. The occupations of both men were listed asfarmers and that of the women as housewives. The fifth chioldof Jan and Celia was Geertje (Gertrude) age six, who would latermarry Boudewijn de Korne.According to the 1890 census John Roest age 65 and his wifeCelia age 69 lived at 700 Union St., Grand Rapids, Michigan,with their son Jay, age 20, daughter Jennie, age 18, andgrandson Isaac Gysbeck, age 12. His brother, now listed asJarret lived at 219 Travers Ave., Grand Rapids, MI. Living withthem in 1900 were their two grandsons, Gerrit J. Loppesmir (25)born Feb 1875 and Jake DeKoning (20) born Oct. 1879 and agranddaughter Gertrude Loppesmir (19) born Aug 1880. The 1880census showed a Gerrit (a laborer) and Gertrude Roest as livingin Grand Rapids Township.
