Notes
a. Note:   NI00545
Note:   Thomas is considered to be the first person of that surname to emigrate to the United States from Europe. Most associate him with the Alsace region of Germany/France. He is assumed to be of German descent. Hoffpauir or (HOFFPAUER) is believed to be from Hofbauer or Hoffbauer.
The first records of Thomas occur in Louisiana in 1778, where he served in the New Orleans Militia under Don Bernando de Galvez, the military governor of La. He was a member of the Fourth Company, Artillery.
He married Marie Charlotte Perillard in New Orleans about this same time. Thomas may have been a Hugenot, who left Europe because of persecution. Early Catholic Church records show Thomas practicing as a Roman Catholic.
In the Spanish census of 1796, his family was recorded as residing in "du Quartier de Placquemine, district of Opelousas territory, La. This is the present town of Lewisburg, St. Landry Parish, La.
He may have migrated from Pennsylvania with the Stutes family. He may have been a cannon maker, and arrived aboard the ship "Le Beaumont".
