Mr. Renshaw was born in Brooklyn, New York, on April 22, 1879, the fourth son of George and Angelina (Hudswell) Renshaw. His father was born in London, England, in 1847. His mother was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1849, soon after her parents came to this county from Birmingham, England. Mr. Renshaw was educated in Brooklyn public schools and went to work for the American Telephone and Telegraph Company as a messenger at the age of fourteen. He grew up in the business. Study and experience made him a qualified technician, and as he demonstrated his capacity, he was entrusted with duties of greater importance, winning successive promotions. For some years before his death he was engineer in charge of the construction program and cost studies group for the entire American Telephone and Telegraph system. His office through the years was in New York City. Mr. Renshaw, whose substantial qualities and wide background of experience made him a valued member of his organization, was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, the New York Electrical Society, and the Illuminating Engineering Society. He was also a member of the American Museum of Natural History. A resident of Elizabeth, New Jersy, for thirty-five years, Mr. Renshaw was well known as an active Presbyterian layman, a loyal supporter of local charities and a citizen whose example was a valuable force in the community. Mr. Renshaw was treasurer of the First Presbyterian Church of Elizabeth for twenty-four years, was a ruling elder of his church and a member of the session. He had served as superintendent of the Bible school from 1911 to 1914. In politics he was a Republican. A man of essentially simple tastes, his church and his home were his major interests aside from his work and his favorite recreation was travel. On August 2, 1904, at Elizabeth, New Jersey, Elbert Norman Renshaw married Elizabeth Wilday, who was born in Birmingham, England, daughter of Robert Patterson and Mary Jane (Watts) Wilday. Her father was a native of London. Her mother was born in Birmingham. Mrs. Renshaw, who survives her husband, is an active church worker in Elizabeth and is known for her deep interest in literary and musical circles of the city and in the Elizabeth Young Women's Christian Association, of which she was first president. Elbert Norman Renshaw died in New York City on May 15, 1939. He was a devoted worker in the industry and organization with which he was so long associated, a valued associate and warm friend. His sterling character, as well as his attainments, always commanded respect; he was admired for his courtesy and consideration of others and the sudden termination of his useful career was a source of regret to many. {photo included}
