Notes
a. Note:   George's military enlistment papers (he served in the Civil War in Co. D., 21st Mich. Infantry from Sept 1864 through June 1865) indicate he was born at Decatur, N.Y., while his marriage record to Louisa Bennett, which is in her pension application file, indicates George was born in Schoharie Co., N.Y. (the town of Decatur is in Otsego Co. but it borders Schoharie Co.). A family tree posted on bernehistory.org lists three wives for "George Nichols Ball" plus the names of his children (that family tree was reportedly taken from a book written many years ago by James Guinn Ball, and although it contains some errors, much of what is known about George is certainly consistent with that book). For example, the book reports that one of his wives was "Charlotto Dow", and the 1850 census of Leon Twp., Cattaraugus Co., N.Y., lists one George Ball, 22, b. N.Y., and Charlotte Ball, 19, b. Mass. (Cattaraugus Co. is where George's parents were living in 1860, and it is also where George's future wife, Roby, was listed in 1860). George has not been found in the 1860 census but records from his pension application report that George "came to Sheridan [Montcalm Co., Mich.] in the fall of 1860... at that time he was living with his wife Ruby [Roby]..." (Roby's granddaughter, Madia Mesler, reported that her grandmother met and married George in the Sheridan area, but it seems they could easily have married in New York before moving to Michigan). Roby died prior to the 1870 census which shows George living in Fairplains Twp., Montcalm Co., with two children: George, 14 (this is more than likely George Eitterman, Roby's child with her 1st husband) and "Adaline, 11", (could the census taker have gotten the name and age wrong? Could it be George Eitterman's brother, John, age 9? Note that Charles Ball, only child of George and Roby, was staying with Roby's sister in Cattaraugus Co. during the 1870 census). George then married Louisa Bennett and they are in the 1880 census of Sidney Twp., Montcalm Co., and by 1900 they are in census of Day Twp., Montcalm Co.
