Notes
a. Note:   John was born in Germany and had immigrated to the U.S. prior to 1853 (the 1855 census indicates he had lived in Dayton township for 2 years). John and Roby are listed in the 1855 New York state census in the township of Dayton, Cattaraugus County, on the same page that Roby's parents are listed. John "Ettiman" was 23 and his wife, "Roba," was 17. John was listed as a farmer. He is listed as owning land, but was unable to read or write. The agricultural statistics of this 1855 census indicates that John owned 4 acres, the value of the farm was one hundred twenty-five dollars, and they owned one cow worth ten dollars. According to Madia Eitterman Mesler, "My father never talked of his parents to me. All I know was from Mamma." In a 1975 letter Madia wrote, "Grandfather John Eitterman getting over a log fence, while hunting, gun discharged killing him -- in State of New York [he would have been only in his late 20's]. My father, George Henry Eitterman, age 12 years came to Sheridan, Mich., to make his home with his uncle Jim Randall. In the fall Grandma Roby Randall Eitterman and Uncle John [Eitterman] age 3 years followed. In or around Sheridan Grandmother met and married John [George] Ball. To this union one son, Charles, was born. Grandma passed away in her 40's [she was only 32]. Heart trouble. Buried in Evergreen Cemetery -- grave unmarked."
The 1860 census of Dayton Twp., Cattaraugus Co., N.Y., shows George "Ittiman" age 5, living with his grandparents, Reuben and Margaret Randall, while Roby "Itiman" age 22 was living in another household in this same township working as a servant. John apparently died just before this census was taken -- or could he have gone to Illinois to find a home before sending for Roby and George -- (Roby's son, John, was reportedly born in Illinois in December 1861 - if her husband had died prior to this census in June 1860, could her son have been born in December of 1860 instead of 1861?).
