Note: According to his biographical sketch in the "Portrait and Biographical Album of Hillsdale Co., Michigan" (Chapman Bros. 1888) John worked on the farm of his father-in-law for the first three years of his marriage. He then enlisted in Co. D, 128th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, serving in the Civil War from Sept 1863 until the close of the war in 1865. After the war they bought land in Section 25 of Ransom Twp., Hillsdale Co., cleared timber to make room for a log house, and developed their farm. In 1886 they built the large frame house which was still in the family in 1996 (owned by Marguerite Greenhoe Witt). John died at the home of his son, John, at Pioneer, Ohio.
