Mary L. Smith: Birth: 17 MAR 1879. Death: 1 AUG 1879
Note: When Betsy (she was also often referred to as Jane) was 5 years old her mother died, and according to Madeline Felker she went to live with the "Brigham family of Connecticut" (However, the 1850 census shows Betsy living with the Sarah Grant family of Clayton, but in 1860 Sarah Grant was living right next to the George Brigham family, and coincidentally this George Brigham family is listed on the same 1850 census page as Betsy's grandparents, John and Mehitabel Page. So Betsy may well have lived with the George Brigham family sometime during the 1850's). According to Betsy's obituary, "In 1858, in company with a brother-in-law, the late Wm. Bopra and family, they moved to Michigan and settled on the farm where they both died." In addition to their own 7 children (2 died in infancy) they also raised 3 children (Viola, Ida, and John) of Betsy's half-brother, James. Eva Nichol has a family Bible with birth dates for the children of Richard Smith. Richard and Betsy were buried in Washington Twp. Cemetery at Carsonville. For detailed information and photos of descendants of Richard and Betsy see "The Descendants of Richard Smith, Mayflower Immigrant and Sanilac County, Michigan, Pioneer" by Carolyn Martin, 2005 (Richard's mother, Clarissa Hubbard, was a descendant of Gov. Wm. Bradford of the Mayflower).
